Did you know Presidio County’s current response rate in the United States Census is just 25.9%? That’s less than half the response rate we had back in the 2010 census. Presidio County stands to lose over $10,000 for each person not counted. If our response rate were to stay at the current level, Presidio County could lose more than 51 million dollars in the next 10 years. Help us make sure every Marfan gets counted. We’ve got a ton of great prizes including $50 gift cards at Porter’s, $50 gift cards at Convenience West BBQ, free burritos at Marfa Burrito, and large DQ Blizzards! 190 winners will be selected to win one of these prizes. Getting counted is easy—just use one of these forms to enter your phone number. Census workers will call you from the (202) area code to get you counted and you’ll automatically be entered to win a prize.

Marfa ISD would like to inform you that on September 8, 2020, The Marfa City Council approved Gonzales Street to become a one way street heading north between Lincoln and Columbia. This will help make the dropping off and picking up of students safer and more efficient. This will also allow us to practice social distancing during student drop off and pick up, because parents will be required to stay in their vehicles and students will not be walking across traffic.

Marfa ISD has been advised by our local health advisor, Dr. Schwartz, that there is a spike in cases of Covid-19 and recommends extending our remote only instruction for one more week. Due to this recommendation, Marfa ISD will be remote only for the week of September 14th through the 18th. Face to face instruction will begin, Monday, September 21, 2020 unless otherwise advised. Marfa ISD is sorry for any inconvenience this may cause you, but please understand that this decision is made with the safety of our students, staff, and community as the utmost priority.

Nineteen years ago, on this day, the United States of America came under attack by terrorists. 2974 people died this 11th day of September at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and on 4 hi-jacked planes. On this 19th year anniversary of September 11, 2001, certainly many people feel that the events of that day must never be forgotten.
Today we remember and honor the thousands of people who died in the events of September 11, 2001. We recognize the endurance of those who survived, the courage of those who risked their lives to save others, and the compassion of all who supported one another. May the lives remembered, the deeds recognized, and the spirit reawakened be eternal beacons, which reaffirm respect for life, strengthen our resolve to preserve freedom, and inspire an end to hatred, ignorance and intolerance.
Let’s make sure that none of us take for granted our personal liberties and freedoms that have come through great sacrifice, past and present.

Marfa Independent School District would like to announce that all children enrolled in the District for the 2020-2021SY will be provided breakfast and lunch free of charge.

The deadline to apply for P-EBT food benefits has
been extended to August 21. Did your child
receive free or reduced-price school meals
through the National School Lunch Program
during the 2019-2020 school year? If so, your
family may be eligible for this one-time food
benefit. Visit hhs.texas.gov/pebt to learn more
about P-EBT. For questions regarding eligibility or
if you need help applying, contact the P-EBT Call
Center at 833-613-6220. The public charge rule

thinks their child was incorrectly denied P-EBT
benefits, they need to contact HHS within 15 days
of receiving their denial notice by calling the P-
EBT Call Center or by email at
AES_PEBT_Complaints@hhsc.state.tx.us. They
must provide proof they received free to
reduced-price meals through the National School
Lunch Program, to get P-EBT benefits. Proof

when their children become eligible for the
National School Lunch Program. If children
attend a CEP or P2 school, a school ID or report
card can be used.
La fecha límite para solicitar beneficios del P-EBT
ha sido extendido hasta el 21 de Agosto. Si tu

Marfa ISD has changed their start of school date. The first day of school is now Tuesday, September 8, 2020.

Marfa ISD is working diligently to finalize our returning to school plan. Two things for certain are that Marfa ISD will begin school on August 10, 2020 and will offer both face-to-face instruction and distance learning methods for delivering instruction. Parents will determine which method they prefer for their student. Once a method of instruction is determined, students will be required to remain in that method for the remainder of that six-week grading period. We also know that in order for a student to participate in extracurricular activities, they must choose the face-to-face instruction method.
What is uncertain at this time is what face-to-face instruction will look like. Marfa ISD is considering the following methods:
Students choosing face-to-face instruction will attend school Monday through Friday as we traditionally have done. This method will make it more difficult to follow social distancing recommendations but allows students to have teacher support daily, or
Students choosing face-to-face instruction will have blended learning where half of the students will physically attend school Monday and Wednesday and the other half will physically attend school on Tuesday and Thursday. On the days that students do not physically attend they will be required to complete required assignments via distance learning. Everyone will have distance learning instruction on Friday. This will allow for social distancing to occur and deep cleaning to happen on Fridays but limits the time a student has with a teacher.
Marfa ISD administration is very interested in knowing how you feel about each method. Marfa ISD administration will be at the Presidio County Courthouse lawn at the following dates and times for you to visit with us.
Thursday, July 10, 2020 11:00 am to 2:00 pm
Thursday, July 10, 2020 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm
Monday, July 13, 2020 11:00 am to 2:00 pm
Monday, July 13, 2020 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm
Wednesday, July 15, 2020 11:00 am to 2:00 pm
Wednesday July 15, 2020 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm
Marfa ISD administration can also be contacted Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. at 432-729-5500.
Thank you for your support during these uncertain times.

Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) is a one-time food benefit for families who lost access to free or reduced-price meals due to school closures. Eligible P-EBT families will receive application instructions from schools in late May. The P-EBT application will open the first week of June.
P-EBT food benefits are for children who received SNAP food benefits for March 2020 and children who are certified for free or reduced-price school meals during the 2019-20 Texas school year. For more information, visit: hhs.texas.gov/PEBT

Marfa ISD Graduation Plan
Graduation will be held at Martin Field on Friday, May 29, 2020 at 7:00p pm. In case of rain, the ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2020 at 7: oo pm.
Be advised, this permission is subject to change as underlying public health conditions change.
Outdoor ceremonies must meet the following requirements:
• School systems must cap the number of total participants (inclusive of students, families, and
staff) to a level that can be managed in the outdoor venue to maximize social distancing, both
during the event and during entry and exit. (Cap of 10 per student, 2 Sections of five, you must have a ticket to enter the event)
• School employees and school facilities must comply with the guidance for School Employees
in School Facilities except as authorized by this guidance.
• Students and parents (or legal guardians) must comply with the guidance on Student NonInstructional Visits except as authorized by this guidance.
• Prior to attending the ceremony, participating students and attending family members will
be screened (via questioning) by school system employees for any of the following new or
worsening signs or symptoms of possible COVID-19:
o Cough
o Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
o Chills
o Repeated shaking with chills
o Muscle pain
o Headache
o Sore throat
o Loss of taste or smell
o Diarrhea
o Feeling feverish or a measured temperature greater than or equal to 100.0 degrees Fahrenheit
o Known close contact with a person who is lab confirmed to have COVID-19 if exposure to
the active confirmed case occurred within the last 14 days
Those found with any of these signs or symptoms must be excluded from the activity.
• Graduates or promoting students may only be brought together for one event per class or
breakout group. No rehearsals will be permitted.
• Keep 6 feet or more of spacing between all participants, except that members of the same
family (five individuals or fewer, excluding the graduate if seated with the household)
may be allowed to sit together in the audience but must be at least 6 feet away from any
other family groups at all times.
• Hand sanitizer or hand washing stations will be available at all venue entrances.
• School employees at the ceremony will be limited to the minimum number needed to
logistically support the ceremony.
• Diplomas or other documents may not be handed from person to person unless gloves are
worn by those distributing diplomas or other documents to students.
• Consistent with the actions taken by many institutions across the state, Marfa ISD recommends that all employees, students, or other visitors wear cloth face coverings (over the nose and mouth) while attending the ceremony, or if they will come within 6 feet of another person who is not a member of that person’s household, except when photos are taken. If available, they should consider wearing non-medical grade face masks.
• Care will be taken and efforts made to mitigate virus exposure when participants
come into contact with documents and other objects such as diplomas and awards.
• School employees will be stationed appropriately to ensure compliance with all
requirements and to limit congregation.
• A robust communication plan must be in place to address steps to be taken before, during,
and after the ceremony to ensure that participants are aware of safety protocols at the
ceremony and explicit instructions to graduates or promoting students not to congregate
outside of school sponsored ceremonies or events. (Further information to be distributed as plans are finalized)
• Members of the audience will have assigned seating
• Families will be given arrivals and departures times to ensure appropriate social
distancing
