The Chinati Foundation initiates series of free family days in July Calling all tri-county families! The Chinati Foundation invites local families to free workshops at the museum. Occurring from 8-11am Saturday mornings on Chinati’s grounds, participants will explore selections from the museum’s collection, engage in artmaking experiences, and meet fellow Big Bend residents. On July 24th, educators will introduce families to Dan Flavin’s untitled (Marfa Project). Upon viewing Flavin’s fluorescent light artworks, participants will work together to make a colorful and playful direct animation film. This workshop will explore concepts of light, motion and transformation. The July 31st event is all about construction. Families will experience Donald Judd’s 100 untitled works in mill aluminum and consider notions of space, shape and placement. Participants will then work together to build a city out of wood blocks and pieces. Light snacks and water will be provided to participants. All ages are welcome; young children are encouraged. Enrollment is limited to 25 total participants per session. Priority will be given to military families, veterans and first-time museum attendees. Please sign up for your workshop of choice by visiting chinati.org/july-family-days/ or contact Molly Bondy at 432 729 4362 EXT.223/mbondy@chinati.org. Covid safety protocols, including masking and respecting social distancing, will be observed.

Students. Please remember, you must commit to in-person or remote learning for each six-week grading period. You are not allowed to be in person one or two days and then remote a few days throughout the six-weeks grading period. The only exceptions are if you are quarantined, have a medical or family emergency, or your parent/guardian meets with the principals to request a change. Moving between the two instructional settings throughout the week is not acceptable and will affect your grades and attendance.

Marfa ISD will continue to require all students, staff, and visitors to wear masks on district property and district events. This requirement is consistent with the advice of health professionals and guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. MISD will continue to follow the guidelines of its CoVID19 protocol for the safety of all students and staff including practicing physical distancing. Texas Education Agency has issued public health guidance that states a public school's current mask policy may continue unchanged. Local school boards have full authority to determine their local mask policy. More: https://bit.ly/2YkeTSH

SNAP Benefit Replacements Due to Winter Storm On February 19, 2021, Governor Greg Abbott announced that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) has received federal approval to allow Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients to apply for replacement benefits for food lost or destroyed due to the severe winter weather by dialing 2-1-1. SNAP recipients who have had food lost or destroyed due to the storm need to apply for replacement food benefits for regular SNAP allotments and SNAP emergency allotments that were provided in response to COVID-19. SNAP clients are encouraged to stay home and request their replacement food benefits by dialing 2-1-1 and selecting option 2. Alternately, recipients can download Form H1855 (Affidavit for Nonreceipt or Destroyed Food Stamp Benefits) on the HHSC website. To limit exposure to COVID-19, recipients are encouraged to mail or fax the completed form to HHSC instead of visiting their local offices. Completed forms should be mailed to Texas Health and Human Services Commission, PO Box 149027, Austin, TX, 78714-9027, or faxed to 1-877-447-2839. Updated NOTIFICATION OF CONFIRMED COVID-19 CASE ON CAMPUS October 12, 2020 Dear Parent/Guardian, In keeping with Marfa ISD’s practices to respond to COVID-19, we are notifying all students’ families that three additional students who were lab-confirmed to have COVID-19 were present on the Marfa Junior/Senior High School campus on October 8, 2020 and one substitute teacher was on the Marfa Elementary campus on October 9, 2020. This brings the total to eight students, one staff member, and a substitute teacher. Due to privacy requirements, we will not be releasing the name of the individuals or details that may identify them. All facilities will be thoroughly disinfected according to our safety response protocol. In addition, the local health department will conduct contact tracing investigations and notify those who have potentially been exposed. Marfa ISD school buildings will be closed until October 19, 2020. Remote instruction will continue for all students from Oct. 12 through Oct. 16, 2020. Students need to continue to check email and Google Classroom and complete daily assignments. Students and staff will return to campus on October 19, 2020. While we do not have reason to believe that those who were not in close contact with the infected individual have reason to be concerned, we ask that you, as always, watch for symptoms of COVID-19. Any of the following symptoms indicate a possible COVID-19 infection: o Temperature of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher when taken by mouth; o Sore throat; o New uncontrolled cough that causes difficulty breathing (or, for students with a chronic allergic/asthmatic cough, a change in their cough from baseline); o Diarrhea, vomiting, or abdominal pain; or o New onset of severe headache, especially with a fever. If you or any member of the Marfa ISD community do begin experiencing any of these symptoms in a way that is not typical, we encourage you to contact your local health provider. We encourage anyone in the Marfa ISD community who is lab-confirmed positive for COVID-19 to please notify the school by calling 432-729-5500. The safety and wellbeing of our students and staff are our highest priority. We will keep you updated with any new information through the school website, social media, and phone messages. Did you know Presidio County’s current response rate in the United States Census is just 25.9%? That’s less than half the response rate we had back in the 2010 census. Presidio County stands to lose over $10,000 for each person not counted. If our response rate were to stay at the current level, Presidio County could lose more than 51 million dollars in the next 10 years. Help us make sure every Marfan gets counted. We’ve got a ton of great prizes including $50 gift cards at Porter’s, $50 gift cards at Convenience West BBQ, free burritos at Marfa Burrito, and large DQ Blizzards! 190 winners will be selected to win one of these prizes. Getting counted is easy—just use one of these forms to enter your phone number. Census workers will call you from the (202) area code to get you counted and you’ll automatically be entered to win a prize. Marfa ISD would like to inform you that on September 8, 2020, The Marfa City Council approved Gonzales Street to become a one way street heading north between Lincoln and Columbia. This will help make the dropping off and picking up of students safer and more efficient. This will also allow us to practice social distancing during student drop off and pick up, because parents will be required to stay in their vehicles and students will not be walking across traffic.

Nineteen years ago, on this day, the United States of America came under attack by terrorists. 2974 people died this 11th day of September at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and on 4 hi-jacked planes. On this 19th year anniversary of September 11, 2001, certainly many people feel that the events of that day must never be forgotten. Today we remember and honor the thousands of people who died in the events of September 11, 2001. We recognize the endurance of those who survived, the courage of those who risked their lives to save others, and the compassion of all who supported one another. May the lives remembered, the deeds recognized, and the spirit reawakened be eternal beacons, which reaffirm respect for life, strengthen our resolve to preserve freedom, and inspire an end to hatred, ignorance and intolerance. Let’s make sure that none of us take for granted our personal liberties and freedoms that have come through great sacrifice, past and present.

The deadline to apply for P-EBT food benefits has been extended to August 21. Did your child receive free or reduced-price school meals through the National School Lunch Program during the 2019-2020 school year? If so, your family may be eligible for this one-time food benefit. Visit hhs.texas.gov/pebt to learn more about P-EBT. For questions regarding eligibility or if you need help applying, contact the P-EBT Call Center at 833-613-6220. The public charge rule does not apply to P-EBT benefits. If a family thinks their child was incorrectly denied P-EBT benefits, they need to contact HHS within 15 days of receiving their denial notice by calling the P- EBT Call Center or by email at AES_PEBT_Complaints@hhsc.state.tx.us. They must provide proof they received free to reduced-price meals through the National School Lunch Program, to get P-EBT benefits. Proof includes the award letter that is sent to parents when their children become eligible for the National School Lunch Program. If children attend a CEP or P2 school, a school ID or report card can be used. Marfa ISD is working diligently to finalize our returning to school plan. Two things for certain are that Marfa ISD will begin school on August 10, 2020 and will offer both face-to-face instruction and distance learning methods for delivering instruction. Parents will determine which method they prefer for their student. Once a method of instruction is determined, students will be required to remain in that method for the remainder of that six-week grading period. We also know that in order for a student to participate in extracurricular activities, they must choose the face-to-face instruction method. What is uncertain at this time is what face-to-face instruction will look like. Marfa ISD is considering the following methods: Students choosing face-to-face instruction will attend school Monday through Friday as we traditionally have done. This method will make it more difficult to follow social distancing recommendations but allows students to have teacher support daily, or Students choosing face-to-face instruction will have blended learning where half of the students will physically attend school Monday and Wednesday and the other half will physically attend school on Tuesday and Thursday. On the days that students do not physically attend they will be required to complete required assignments via distance learning. Everyone will have distance learning instruction on Friday. This will allow for social distancing to occur and deep cleaning to happen on Fridays but limits the time a student has with a teacher. Marfa ISD administration is very interested in knowing how you feel about each method. Marfa ISD administration will be at the Presidio County Courthouse lawn at the following dates and times for you to visit with us. Thursday, July 10, 2020 11:00 am to 2:00 pm Thursday, July 10, 2020 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm Monday, July 13, 2020 11:00 am to 2:00 pm Monday, July 13, 2020 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm Wednesday, July 15, 2020 11:00 am to 2:00 pm Wednesday July 15, 2020 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm Marfa ISD administration can also be contacted Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. at 432-729-5500. Marfa ISD Graduation Plan Graduation will be held at Martin Field on Friday, May 29, 2020 at 7:00p pm. In case of rain, the ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2020 at 7: oo pm. Be advised, this permission is subject to change as underlying public health conditions change. Outdoor ceremonies must meet the following requirements: • School systems must cap the number of total participants (inclusive of students, families, and staff) to a level that can be managed in the outdoor venue to maximize social distancing, both during the event and during entry and exit. (Cap of 10 per student, 2 Sections of five, you must have a ticket to enter the event) • School employees and school facilities must comply with the guidance for School Employees in School Facilities except as authorized by this guidance. • Students and parents (or legal guardians) must comply with the guidance on Student NonInstructional Visits except as authorized by this guidance. • Prior to attending the ceremony, participating students and attending family members will be screened (via questioning) by school system employees for any of the following new or worsening signs or symptoms of possible COVID-19: o Cough o Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing o Chills o Repeated shaking with chills o Muscle pain o Headache o Sore throat o Loss of taste or smell o Diarrhea o Feeling feverish or a measured temperature greater than or equal to 100.0 degrees Fahrenheit o Known close contact with a person who is lab confirmed to have COVID-19 if exposure to the active confirmed case occurred within the last 14 days Those found with any of these signs or symptoms must be excluded from the activity. • Graduates or promoting students may only be brought together for one event per class or breakout group. No rehearsals will be permitted. • Keep 6 feet or more of spacing between all participants, except that members of the same family (five individuals or fewer, excluding the graduate if seated with the household) may be allowed to sit together in the audience but must be at least 6 feet away from any other family groups at all times. • Hand sanitizer or hand washing stations will be available at all venue entrances. • School employees at the ceremony will be limited to the minimum number needed to logistically support the ceremony. • Diplomas or other documents may not be handed from person to person unless gloves are worn by those distributing diplomas or other documents to students. • Consistent with the actions taken by many institutions across the state, Marfa ISD recommends that all employees, students, or other visitors wear cloth face coverings (over the nose and mouth) while attending the ceremony, or if they will come within 6 feet of another person who is not a member of that person’s household, except when photos are taken. If available, they should consider wearing non-medical grade face masks. • Care will be taken and efforts made to mitigate virus exposure when participants come into contact with documents and other objects such as diplomas and awards. • School employees will be stationed appropriately to ensure compliance with all requirements and to limit congregation. • A robust communication plan must be in place to address steps to be taken before, during, and after the ceremony to ensure that participants are aware of safety protocols at the ceremony and explicit instructions to graduates or promoting students not to congregate outside of school sponsored ceremonies or events. (Further information to be distributed as plans are finalized) • Members of the audience will have assigned seating • Families will be given arrivals and departures times to ensure appropriate social distancing

Parking spots for each graduate’s immediate family will be reserved along the west side of the County Courthouse. All other parking spots along the parade route are open to the public.  Seniors will be driven in decorated vehicles and proceed from the high school headed east down Lincoln Street. The parade will turn left to go all the way around the Courthouse, then continue south down Highland Avenue, turning right on Oak Street where the parade will end.  Music, announcements, and senior highlights will be broadcast live on KRTS at 93.5 FM and stream at marfapublicradio.org.
