Recently the floors at Marfa High have been in rough condition. Termites and water leakage have been eating away at some school floors. Mr. Peters, superintendent at Marfa High, is making all the necessary plans to fix this problem. “Five classrooms should take about five weeks, but we have to go through a bid process.”
The Academy of Learning program is a new teaching program for students to learn by working hands on and using technology. The Academy of Learning program is just at its “pilot” phase this year to see how the students will react. This program is meant to push the students to “self-motivate themselves,” As Mrs. Taqui enthuses. Mrs. Jenkins and Mrs. Taqui are quite excited and feel quite confident in this program.
Marfa ISD is now offering a culinary arts class in the Robinson Cafeteria on campus. This idea began December of 2015. It was the brainchild of the students who were interested in furthering their career in culinary arts. The students spoke with Marfa ISD Superintendent Mr. Peters and made arrangements to make this project work. The class officially began January 5th, 2016.
The after school art program is a great opportunity for high school students who cannot afford art supplies to express themselves by making art in a safe open place. This past show would be the fourth year of the program but the program was first started in spring of 2012 through the Marfa studio of the arts elementary program but stopped due to a lack of funds, Ms. Redding then went to the Marfa Education Foundation and asked if they would be interested in funding her program for High School artists.
The Marfa High School welding program has made some notable accomplishments within the last few years; State Championships and blue ribbons are some notable mentions. A new Ag building built late last year houses new projects that many students are glad to show off during regional stock shows.
