Marfa ISD Superintendent of Schools Teloa Swinnea Teloa Swinnea was named Superintendent of Schools of the Marfa Independent School District in October 2007, having served as Interim Superintendent since August 2007, following a year as Marfa Junior/Senior High School principal. A native of Uvalde, Swinnea and her husband of forty-three years have two married sons and three grandchildren. Prior to earning degrees from Sul Ross State University, Swinnea completed undergraduate work at Pan American University in Edinburg and the University of Texas at El Paso. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Education with teaching certificates in both elementary and secondary education. Her specialized fields are in English and Gifted and Talented Education. Her professional credentials include a Master's of Education as a Reading Specialist, the Mid-Management Administrator and the Superintendent's certificates. Beginning as a classroom teacher in Marfa in 1982, Swinnea later taught at the elementary school level in Fort Davis, the middle school grades in McCamey, and high school English and the gifted education program at Presidio. She served as a campus and district administrator in Presidio prior to joining Region 18 Education Service Center in Midland as a consultant in school administration. Swinnea was named Director of Administration and Support at Region 18 Education Service Center in 2002. In this capacity, she worked with 33 public school districts, delivering the following services: campus and school administrator training and appraisals; educator recruitment; teacher and administrator mentoring, as well as school board member training. During her tenure at the service center, she supervised teacher certification and personnel services, the alternative teacher certification program, food service and child nutrition programs, media and print shop operations, bus driver training, and related general staff development. A child advocate, Swinnea is a member of the Board of Directors of Frontier CASA, serving the West Texas counties of Hudspeth, Culberson, Jeff Davis, Presidio, Brewster, Pecos, and Reeves. Working with the Marfa ISD team as the district focuses on student success through enrichment and acceleration, Swinnea notes upward momentum across the district. Returning to the district where she began her career is a rewarding opportunity. |
